Working remotely and from home

The pros and cons of staff working away from the office

With the sudden onset of COVID-19, organisations scrambled to implement remote access for staff. In response we have published the following guide on considerations around remote access regardless of the urgency. For simplicity, we have broken the page into two core options for you to consider.  Short term fast solution’s you can implement now and permanent solutions for the future. Permanent solutions depend on your current infrastructure

Short term fast solution

What you can do now with minimum effort

Remote Desktop with third party cloud providers

Remote desktop is a method to connect to work computers from other devices and including tablets where they can see the desktop or screen of their work computer. This solution will not work if you take your laptop home as obliviously the desktop is with you and not connected to the work network. The following two providers are well known and trusted in the industry. These products are typically used for IT support but can be used for any situation requiring remote access. Note that whilst these TeamViewer offer free connections, they understand when a regular connections are occurring and hence consider you a business user. At that point users are prompted to purchase a subscription license which must be paid for.

Important: Use the links provided buy us to view these products. By their very nature there are impersonators with links found in search engines that will redirect you to a malicious website

TeamViewer

https://www.teamviewer.com/en/

TeamViewer are a well established remote access platform common in the work place and trusted by IT pros for years.  Its easy to download and deploy ready for use. Notes about TeamViewer

  1. Whilst they offer free connections they quickly understand if you’re using the product regularly and prompt for licensing. If you don’t license, remote sessions last for only three minutes before you are disconnected and performance is queued. You can reconnect immediately, but this will quickly become annoying.
  2. They offer file transfer and chat connections
  3. TeamViewer can be deployed on Windows, Mac’s, Chrome OS, iOS (iPads and iPhones), Android and Blackberry devices.

We can assist in deploying and licensing TeamViewer for you which can even be done remotely using TeamViewer if you arr limiting onsite visits. Contact us here if you need our help even if you are not an existing client.

LogMeIn

https://www.logmein.com/

LogMeIn are another well established remote access platform common in the work place and trusted by IT pros. Its easy to download and deploy ready for use however licensing is required in advance even though you can deploy a 14 day trial. We find LogMeIn expensive for what it does but

  1. Licensing must be paid for in advance but you can deploy a 14 day trial.
  2. They offer file transfer and chat connections
  3. TeamViewer can be deployed on Windows, Mac’s, Chrome OS, iOS (iPads and iPhones) and Android devices.

We can assist in deploying and licensing LogMeIn for you which can also be done remotely if you are limiting onsite visits. Contact us here if you need our help even if you are not an existing client.

Remote desktop with Windows built in RDP

Windows has a built in function for Remote Desktop services but this is usually deployed in controlled and secure manner of which there are several approaches

Direct to computer

This approach requires ports opened on company router and pathways mapped to relevant computers. This only suits small organisations and should be temporary only as its not considered secure. However, if the connection is deployed over a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection security is covered. In this scenario a VPN can only be configured on your router or using a third party service.

Unfortunately we have to pause here for the moment. We are working hard to get more relevant information up as soon as we can, but COVID-19 has redistricted our skills urgently elsewhere Please check this site every day for updated information
